Background and connections on one of the most significant widespread diseases – from the basics through metabolic syndrome to the BMI calculator.

Medically reviewed byDr. med. Roland MörmelSpecialist in internal medicineLast updated:
Obesity is the term used for severe excess weight or corpulence that can harm health. The World Health Organization (WHO) divides obesity into three degrees of severity on the basis of the body mass index (BMI). More on degrees, symptoms and treatment under What is obesity?
If pathological corpulence remains untreated in the long term, it places strain on the whole body and increases the risk of sometimes serious secondary illnesses. Tap on an area to see which complaints and illnesses can occur there.
Also possible: increased sweating (hyperhidrosis), cancers. Calculate your BMI
When several factors come together, it becomes hard to lose weight sustainably on your own. When at least two metabolic disorders – raised blood fat or blood sugar levels, reduced HDL cholesterol or high blood pressure – are added to abdominal excess weight, doctors speak of metabolic syndrome.
Work out your own body mass index here. A BMI of 25 or above is by definition classed as excess weight, and a BMI of 30 or above as obesity. More on the meaning of the value in the BMI calculator.

The BMI is a guide value based on the WHO weight classes. Which treatment may be suitable for you will be clarified by your specialist in conversation.
The first step is a conversation: choose your treatment, location and appointment online here – consultation on site, by video or by phone.
