How 360-degree liposuction works

After significant weight loss, for example after a bariatric procedure, stubborn fat deposits often remain that cannot be removed even by intensive training and a healthy diet. Typical areas are the abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, buttocks and back – and they are rarely concentrated in a single spot.

Classic liposuction usually treats individual zones. 360-degree liposuction, also called full body liposuction, thinks of the trunk as a whole: fat deposits from several zones at the front, sides and back are suctioned out in a single procedure and the proportions are balanced against each other. This can create a slimmer waist, and the silhouette looks harmonious from every direction – not just from the front. Instead of several procedures one after another, one anaesthetic is enough for all the planned areas.

360-degree liposuction is not for weight loss but for targeted shaping of the body contour (body contouring). It is part of Weight Doctors® RESHAPE: with an individual treatment plan and support from the first consultation to aftercare.

Who may 360-degree liposuction be suitable for?

It is recommended above all if, after bariatric surgery or intensive conservative weight loss, fat deposits remain in several places – for example on the abdomen, flanks, hips or back – that training and a healthy diet can no longer reach. Such deposits can diminish the result of the weight loss and limit satisfaction with the new body.

Before deciding, what counts is a stable weight, good general health and above all realistic expectations: 360-degree liposuction shapes the contour; it does not tighten excess skin. In the personal consultation at Weight Doctors® RESHAPE we therefore discuss all aspects of the procedure and all options in advance – sometimes another procedure is the better route, or a complement:

The 360-degree liposuction procedure

The procedure takes about 2.5–3 hours, depending on the number and size of the zones. This is how 360-degree liposuction proceeds:

  1. Consultation and planningYour surgeon examines the areas under consideration and assesses the elasticity of your skin. Together you decide which regions will be treated and discuss the technique: tumescent, ultrasound-assisted (UAL) or vibration-assisted liposuction (VAL). Because several areas are treated, the discussion also covers the extent of the procedure, the risks and the course of healing.
  2. PreparationA blood test takes place before the procedure. In the days beforehand, you avoid alcohol and nicotine and clarify which medication you may continue to take. Also plan for support in the first days afterwards.
  3. ProcedureOn the day of the operation you arrive fasting; after a final discussion, the zones are marked. Because the procedure involves several body regions, it is usually carried out under general anaesthesia. Through incisions only a few millimetres small, in inconspicuous places, the tumescent solution of saline, local anaesthetic and adrenaline is introduced; it reduces bleeding and makes suctioning easier. A thin cannula then loosens the fatty tissue and a vacuum device suctions it out – zone by zone, from the front and side of the abdomen across the flanks to the lower back. The aim is an even silhouette without transitions.
  4. After the procedureThe areas are dressed with compression bandages, and you stay one night for observation. You wear compression garments around the clock for several weeks, except when showering.
  5. AftercareFollow-up appointments accompany healing; you keep the small incisions clean and dry so that they heal well. Lighter everyday activities are usually possible after about a week, sport after 4–6 weeks.

How effective is 360-degree liposuction?

Studies and reports from patients show that liposuction of several zones can visibly improve the result after major weight loss: the proportions of the trunk become more balanced, the silhouette more even. Many people feel more comfortable in their body afterwards. Results vary individually – they depend on your skin, the distribution of fat deposits and your goals.

What is 360-degree liposuction?

A liposuction that treats several zones around the trunk in one procedure – front, sides and back. The aim is a silhouette that looks harmonious from all sides, for example with a slimmer waist.

Which areas of the body are treated?

As a rule the abdomen, flanks and lower back, in some cases also the thighs and buttocks. Which zones make sense for you is decided together with your surgeon.

How does it differ from classic liposuction?

Liposuction usually treats individual areas, often as an outpatient. The 360-degree variant shapes several zones in one session; it takes longer, is carried out under general anaesthesia and involves a night at the clinic.

Can I lose weight with 360-degree liposuction?

No. It is for body shaping, not for weight loss. On the contrary, a weight that is already stable is a prerequisite.

How long does the procedure take?

About 2.5–3 hours, depending on the number and size of the zones.

Why general anaesthesia and a night at the clinic?

Because several body regions are treated in one procedure, it is usually carried out under general anaesthesia. In the night afterwards you stay at the clinic for observation and are cared for before you go home.

How long do I have to wear compression garments?

Several weeks around the clock; you only take them off to shower. They reduce swelling and help the skin adapt to the new contours.

When can I work and exercise again?

Lighter activities are usually possible after about a week, sport and physically strenuous work after about 4–6 weeks – depending on your doctor’s instructions.

How long does healing take, and when can the result be seen?

Swelling and bruising usually subside within a few weeks. The final result becomes apparent after about three to six months, when healing is complete and the skin has adapted to the new contours. Results vary individually. Until then, avoid physical exertion, wear the compression garments and follow your doctor’s instructions closely.

What risks and side effects can 360-degree liposuction have?

As with any surgical procedure, risks and side effects are possible: swelling, bruising, infections and uneven skin contours, and in rare cases thromboses or wound-healing disorders. Choosing an experienced specialist and careful aftercare can reduce the risk; it is important to follow all medical instructions closely. Your doctor will inform you about possible risks and complications before the procedure.

Is the result permanent?

The fat cells that have been suctioned out do not come back. If your weight remains stable, the contour is also generally maintained; if you gain weight later, fat is deposited in other places.

Liposuction removes fat, but not skin. If the skin is still elastic, it is often enough. If a lot of skin hangs from the trunk after weight loss, a body lift tightens the abdomen, flanks, buttocks and thighs in one procedure. The examination shows what suits you.
